SMA_DATES.JOB write to a Datafile instead of a Letter File

Could the RSJ/SMA_DATES.JOB programs use the DATAFILES directory instead of the LETTERSPECS directory (Letter Files)?
The security within the DATAFILES directory on Episys is locked down much tighter than the LETTERSPECS directory. The SMA_DATES letterfile is critical to RSJ's operation. If someone tampers with the Letter File not knowing what exactly it does they could cause major damage.
